The USB and FireWire ports on the rear of the ICE-16 are only available when using the device as an audio interface via a DAW and drivers.
The front USB connection is used for all USB based standalone recording & playback.
Connecting a USB memory device into the (type A) USB DRIVE port on the front of your ICE-16 will disconnect any computer connection plugged into any of the FireWire or USB ports on the rear-panel. i.e. You cannot record direct to USB memory and stream audio to a computer at the same time.
ICE-16 / ICE-16D has no digital connectivity for standalone recording purposes, only analogue inputs.
